Volume of pipe formula: how to calculate pipe volume

Use this pipe volume formula to calculate the volume of water (or any fluid) in a pipe, based on its dimensions:

Pipe volume = π × radius² × length

This is the same cylinder volume formula used to find the volume of a cylindrical pipe. Here’s how to do it step by step:

  1. Measure the inner diameter of the pipe (not the outer diameter—unless you’re using our free tool, which allows for either measurement).
  2. Divide the diameter by 2 to get the radius.
  3. Square the radius (multiply it by itself).
  4. Multiply by π (about 3.1416).
  5. Multiply by the length of the pipe.

The result gives you the pipe’s volume in cubic inches, cubic feet, cubic meters, centimeters, or millimeters. It all depends on the units you used for diameter and length.

If you know the internal volume of a pipe and its length, you can calculate diameter by rearranging the pipe volume formula like so:

Diameter = Square root of ( (Volume / Length) / π ) x 2

For this example, let’s say you have a 10-foot pipe with a volume of 94.2 in³, or 0.408 gallons. Here’s how we would find the pipe’s diameter:

1. Convert the pipe’s length to inches (since the volume is in cubic inches)
• 10 feet x 12 = 120 inches
2. Divide the pipe’s volume by its length.
• 94.2 in³ ÷ 120 in = 0.785 in²
3. Divide by pi.
• 0.785 ÷ 𝜋 = 0.25
4. Find the square root to get the pipe’s radius.
• √0.25 = 0.5 in
5. Multiply the radius by 2 to get the diameter.
• 0.5 × 2 = 1 inch
