Growing a lawn care business past the million-dollar mark

Every service business owner has a number they want to hit. For Chris Chase, owner of Grass Groomers in Orlando, Florida, that number was $1 million.

Before Jobber, I never even thought I would be able to get to a certain level. Once I got Jobber, it opened my mind and helped me realize that I’m able to break through that rooftop of getting a million plus.

Chris started Grass Groomers more than 11 years ago. After seven years of using Jobber,  the software became a major part of the company’s growth. “Jobber was definitely a huge part of that,” said Chris.

Today, Grass Groomers runs a $1 million operation with faster communication, streamlined invoicing, and crews that stay aligned in the field.

Grass Groomers relies on Jobber to keep their growing team organized and moving efficiently. With clear schedules and easy communication, crews can focus on delivering great service every day.

Winning more lawn care jobs with online booking and faster quoting

Potential customers can fill out a request form that collects the details his team needs before the visit even happens. “There’s a link that Jobber provides you to give to the customer. They fill out a form, and it gives me everything I need about their job,” said Chris.

Once Chris or his team arrives at the property, he simply builds and sends the quote through Jobber right away.

I just love that we can send a quote as we’re standing there with the customer.

That speed makes a difference for Chris. “I would say 90–95% of the time we get that job. And I count that to having Jobber.” The seamless quoting process also creates opportunities to upsell additional services directly from the quote.

Being able to sell extra services and people having that option on their quotes has probably brought up my business 40–50% in more revenue.

Improving communication with lawn care customers

Before Jobber, communication was one of the biggest pain points in the business.

Now customers can connect with Grass Groomers in the way that works best for them. Clients can easily use Jobber’s customer communication features to:

  • Text the business
  • Email the team
  • Receive automated reminders and updates

Jobber gives you your own number too. They can text, email, or message you on Jobber itself.

That responsiveness matters in a competitive market. “The first person that gets back to them usually gets the job,” said Chris.

By centralizing conversations and automating reminders, Grass Groomers delivers a more professional customer experience without adding extra admin work.

Keeping crews aligned with the mobile app

Employee retention can be challenging in the green industry, but Chris says giving crews better systems has helped create a smoother work environment. “I’ve been told by my employees that working with Jobber makes life easy for them,” said Chris.

His crew leaders use the Jobber mobile app to access everything they need before arriving on-site, including:

  • Job instructions
  • Property notes
  • Photos
  • Service details
  • Time tracking
  • Customer information

All the crew leaders are able to see exactly what needs to be done. There’s no question.

Because crews have access to everything they need in one system, there’s less confusion throughout the day. That organization reduces frustration, improves accountability, and helps crews stay focused on delivering quality work.

The mobile app also helps crews:

  • Clock in and out
  • Track time on jobs
  • Add notes and photos
  • See job instructions instantly

For Chris, the app has become one of the biggest drivers of operational growth. “Having the mobile app has been the number one reason my business has grown.”

Getting paid faster with automated reminders and online payments

Collecting payments used to include constant follow-up from Chris and his team.

But after switching to Jobber invoicing and payments:

  • Invoices are sent digitally.
  • Invoice reminders go out automatically.
  • Customers can pay online using their preferred payment method (e.g., credit cards or ACH).

Invoices get paid on time. It automatically sends reminders to the clients.

Chris says the convenience speeds up payments significantly. “I’d say 80% of the time they immediately pay because of Jobber payments.”

For Grass Groomers, faster payments mean healthier cash flow and less time chasing overdue invoices. “There’s really no excuse not to get paid,” said Chris.

Making sure every service gets billed

Chris used to rely on handwritten notes and memory to keep track of completed work. That easily led to missed invoices or forgotten add-on services.

Every job detail now lives inside Jobber, including notes attached to quotes, visits, and invoices.

If I have notes, I can put that inside the quote or the invoice… which helps me remind me or whoever’s doing the job.

That visibility helps the team capture every completed service and avoid leaving money on the table.

Running multiple service businesses from one platform

As Grass Groomers grew, Chris started adding more services to the business, including:

  • Dumpster rental
  • Stump grinding
  • Pressure washing
  • Tree services
  • Additional landscaping operations

Today, six of his businesses operate through Jobber. “Once I realized how it can simplify things, I started putting other businesses on Jobber,” said Chris.

Managing everything in one platform helps Chris stay organized as the company continues to grow.

It makes everything self-efficient. I run the business. The business doesn’t run me.

Building a simpler, more scalable lawn care business

For Chris, the biggest impact of Jobber isn’t just more money, it’s having a business that runs more smoothly.

Jobber has made my life easier in the fact that it simplified my business.

Instead of juggling scheduling, communication, quoting, invoicing, and payments across multiple systems, everything now lives in one place.

That simplicity helped Grass Groomers grow into a million-dollar lawn care business without adding unnecessary complexity.

Advice for other lawn care business owners

Chris regularly recommends Jobber to other service business owners looking to grow. “I wouldn’t only recommend Jobber to just lawn care. I would recommend it to anybody that has a business.” For him, the value is clear.

The people that say Jobber is too expensive haven’t tried it yet. It pays for itself in the first month.

From faster quotes and better communication to improved cash flow and more organized crews, Grass Groomers built a stronger operation with Jobber by simplifying how the business runs.
